I joined the Liberal Democrats in 2005, inspired by Charles Kennedy and his principled opposition to the illegal war in Iraq.
I am a professional environmentalist, specialising in the circular economy and resource management fields, currently working for Zero Waste Scotland as Head of Policy after several previous executive and leadership roles in the public, private and community sectors.
I live in Duns, Berwickshire with my wife Angela who teaches primary in Kelso, and my teenage sons John and Patrick.

Why I’m Standing
South Scotland needs a strong and committed team of campaigners to deliver victory in the list campaign. I will campaign intensively as part of the selected team to deliver that victory.
I believe that my experience, energy and enthusiasm qualify me for the No.1 role. I am ready to serve; this is a unique opportunity for me to help deliver the change that Scotland so badly needs in Holyrood.
Our party is getting stronger, and I will do all I can to build that strength in South Scotland. The chance to influence the future direction of the country is rare, I want to help build the team to seize that opportunity.
Select me as your No.1 Choice, and I will bring all my experience, leadership and motivation to elect one -- possibly more -- list MSPs to South Scotland.
Nothing will be left on the pitch!

My Values and Priorities

I've always been a Liberal at heart. I hated the stifling municipal socialism of my teenage Lancashire home, and I liked the local, hard-working Liberals and used to help deliver FOCUS. I was a slow burn joiner, supporting several local campaigners in various places I lived, voting SDP-Liberal Alliance in 1983 and 1987 but then concentrating my campaigning energies on my career in the recycling world.
When I eventually came to politics, it was through finally appreciating the principles and values of the Liberal Democrats, as articulated by the late Charles Kennedy. I found my home -- liberal, internationalist, European, environmentalist, free-thinking and embracing diversity, rejecting conformity.
I'm a practical policymaker and campaigner; I like to get things done and I can work collaboratively - we are going to need this in the next Holyrood.
My priorities as an MSP would include championing our region's needs -- affordable homes, better health and social care, rural transport, sustainable tourism, accessible education and nursery provision, future skills development for our next workforce, protecting community assets. There is so much to care about and try to improve.
Building our party is important too -- supporting all local parties across the region, campaigning, recruiting and building for further success in 2027 and beyond.
I will be your champion for the region and channel to Holyrood -- together we can and will make a difference for Scotland, the Liberal Democrat difference the country needs.
